Welcome to the Department of Energy’s Renewable

Renewable energy comes from natural, inexhaustible sources such as the solar, wind, hydro, and biomass. Unlike conventional energy, renewable energy is clean, sustainable, and environmentally friendly, playing a key role in addressing climate change and achieving energy security.

The Department of Energy (DoE) aims to promote the development, adoption, and integration of renewable energy technologies in Lesotho to ensure reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy access for all citizens.

Key Renewable Energy Sources in Lesotho

  1. Solar Energy
    • Lesotho enjoys high solar radiation throughout the year, making solar power ideal for homes, businesses, and off-grid communities.
    • The DoE supports solar photovoltaic (PV) projects and solar water heating initiatives.
  2. Wind Energy
    • Certain highland areas in Lesotho are suitable for wind energy generation.
    • Wind farms can provide clean electricity to local communities and the national grid.
  3. Hydropower
    • Small-scale hydropower projects complement conventional hydropower plants.
    • They provide decentralized energy solutions, particularly in remote areas.
  4. Biomass Energy
    • Biomass, including agricultural residues and wood, is widely used for cooking and heating.
    • Modern biomass technologies improve efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Our Goals

  • Expand Access: Reach off-grid and underserved communities with renewable energy solutions.
  • Sustainability: Reduce greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact.
  • Innovation & Investment: Encourage public and private partnerships to scale up renewable energy projects.
