What We Do

Department of Energy

 The Department of Energy (DoE) is responsible for leading Lesotho’s efforts to achieve universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy. It oversees national energy planning, coordination, and management to support economic growth and environmental sustainability. The DoE also develops and implements energy policies that promote security, efficiency, and innovation across electricity, petroleum, biomass, and renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. 

Core functions

 The Department of Energy’s core functions focus on ensuring sustainable energy development and access across Lesotho. These include:

  • Policy Formulation and Implementation: Developing and enforcing national energy policies and strategies.
  • Energy Planning and Regulation: Overseeing energy sector planning, regulation, and compliance.
  • Promotion of Renewable and Alternative Energy: Encouraging the adoption of clean and sustainable energy sources.
  • Conventional Energy Development:  Ensure reliable and equitable access to petroleum products nationwide.
