Vision, Mission and Mandate


The Department of Energy was created in 1985 as a department within the then Water, Energy and Mining Ministry (WEMMIN). It was formally established by the Fuel and Services Control Act of 1983.

Energy shall be universally accessible and affordable in a sustainable manner, with minimal negative impact on the environment. 

The ministry responsible for energy affairs shall ensure that an enabling environment for efficient and effective energy services delivery is maintained through policy and legislative instruments to enhance access, affordability and ultimately socio-economic development. 


To create a conducive environment for the development of energy resources through the:
-Development of policies and strategies in order to ensure security of energy supply and services
-Coordination and management of the energy sector
